"SMOKEY"

After 17 years, my beloved Oscar died, and my heart broke.  I swore I would never put myself through another dog's death again.  Then came Smokey.  Purchased from a breeder as a puppy by a married couple six years ago, he was abandoned when they divorced.  Neither one would take this poor, confused, affectionate dog with them.  My husband brought him home a month ago.  He's here to stay in his new home with us...forever.

"RENEGADE STRIKER"

Service Dog - AKC & USA

Photo by Louis Jones US Navy-Deceased

On August 2nd, 2005, our beloved pet and service animal AKC German shepherd dog Renegade Striker left his earthly family for the Creator’s Heavenly Garden. He spent his last summer painfully training his replacement, AKC German shepherd Queen of Sheba.  Striker stayed home while Sheba graduated in a crowded Reno hotel and casino amidst smokers, partiers, noise, packed elevators, & her very first booming thunderstorm.  Throughout every single moment, this 14 month old pup did Striker proud. Because of Striker's meticulous training by example--Sheba became Registered Calif. Service Dog #50.  Together, our big guy Striker and our newbie shone brightly.

After we arrived home, Striker refused his favorite orange plastic basketball, a gift from my sister Mara.  He slowly ambled in the citrus groves one last time, carrying a grapefruit for "let's play catch" with his forever heart of hearts, my husband. Then, Striker told us his time here was done.  Strikey died in my lap under California's sunny skies, his chin resting lightly on the palms of his favorite vet, my arms tightly around him.  After 11 years, with one last sigh, he left his worn, aged body and failing kidneys behind.  He deserved a peaceful, fresh start in Heaven with all those he loved, two feet or four.

In memory of Striker, Registered Calif. Service Dog #21, we ask that you remember those dogs who are alive but not at peace, not safe. On this web site, you will find free complete short stories with animal rescue links.  Some merely require a "click" to fund--it doesn't cost a cent, just a minute of your time.

Striker stayed at our sides until we knew he needed us to make the choice for him.  He died like he lived, with heart, soul, loyalty, courage, and love.  Most of all, love. Thank you letting us share his story!
